I'm going to send my web designer to this post to make sure I have no IE6 problems. Hardly any designers know how to handle it.

True, we need to think that way when building websites for clients, for sure. I'm not comfortable telling someone not to pay attention to 12% of their visitors :)

Nice post! All of your 5 points makes a lot of sense.

With regards to IE6 becoming obsolete, it would take a lot of time till we stop considering IE6 especially if your building consumer facing portals

Thanks for the post Tim! This is all very useful information. I also really appreciate Alex’s’ response, I will most definitely be attaching separate IE style sheets from now on - especially when it comes to the margin issue!

As for IE6 becoming obsolete - not so sure I would but all my eggs in that basket just yet, its always better safe than sorry. I guess having designed web sites for over 12 years has made me leery...

That's excellent advice, something a lot of designers could really take advantage of. And in fact IE6 is quickly becoming obsolete, i doubt we'll have to pay attention for too much longer ...

Actually there is also a javascript fix that 'helps' IE6 see transparency as well. But keeping it simple. Thanks for the resource!

Good advice! You can also attach a separate stylesheet to override pesky CSS bugs only for IE6 or IE7. It's just a bit of javascript that calls it from the HEAD of the document:

<img src="http://webdesignersedge.com/wp-content/uploads/pics/ScreenShot056.png" alt="IE6 javascript" />

Also, one thing that has helped us before beginning a contract is to ask clients the particulars on which browsers they want to support and document this in the agreement.

Unfortunately 40% of medium/large corporations are tied to IE6 because of security implications, patches or IT departments that are swamped and have not rolled out upgrades, so for larger clients unfortunately IE6 is often a must-have. My advice is if it's going to take you 25% more time to fix issues for an obsolete browser, account for this up front and make it worth your while.

Dont give up on PNG's, this method is pretty handy, and its not that painfull as it does mean you end up with a lower page weight.

i use paint.net of Fireworks to cook these babys, Photoshop wont work.
